SELF PORTRAITURE

& IDENTITY

There are many reasons why an artist might do self-portrait. Self-portraiture as an art form reflects their emotions or how they want to portray themselves. The artist controls what details are included and what details are excluded from the work, time and space, composition, body gestures and the setting. Through self-portraiture, we become the representative figure in our own work.

A self-portrait does not necessarily have to be representational – an abstract or symbolic depiction by an artist of themselves can also be classed as a self-portrait. A self-portrait can also be in any medium.
